Historically, Samsung's app has been sub-standard to others. However, generally all TV apps are sub-standard for DIRECTV STREAM. It functions better to have a dedicated streaming box (Roku, Firestick, etc.) or DirecTV's Gemini/Gemini Air if you wanted a more traditional remote control experience.
Those 'smart' TVs don't properly support the apps for long and their hardware doesn't always keep up for the app as they would rather you buy another TV at that time. Dedicated streaming boxes tend to be more reliable, lasting longer, because that is what they are specifically built for.

Neither. Best to use a separate streaming device. Native TV apps never keep up-to-date with fixes and enhancements.
