Duplicate recording algorithm on both satellite and stream needs to be fixed.

Tennis channel 217 has multiple showings of same live event at different times on the same day.

March 6th thru 13th

2024 BNP Paribas open tennis at 11am (8hrs) live

2024 BNP Paribas open tennis at 7pm (3hrs) live

On satellite

If you set a series record for this event, it will not record the 7:00 p.m. episodes (at least through March 13th) because it thinks they are duplicate recordings. This has been going on for years. There is a workaround for this because you can set individual recordings and it doesn't check for duplicates.

On stream

This also occurs, but there is not a workaround. When you try to set a separate recording at 7:00 p.m., stream thinks that the 7:00 p.m. episode is being recorded. See attached photos. You'll notice that the episode is for 3 hours, but the record indicator shows the episode starting at 11:00 a.m. and the only option is to cancel the recording.

I am doing a 5-day trial of stream to see how it works. This would be a problem for me switching to stream.

Thanks

This also happens on ESPN and ESPN2 when they broadcast Wimbledon or the US Open

Does using the Gemini Air or Gemini box for DirecTV Stream to schedule recordings solve this problem or is it only a problem when scheduling recordings using the DirecTV Stream app downloaded onto the smart TV or device (e.g., Fire TV, iPhone, iPad, etc.)?

This annoying problem really needs to be fixed ASAP as it's pretty ridiculous this is happening with today's DVR technology.

I do not have either one of those boxes. I only had DirecTV stream for 2 days before I canceled DirecTV stream. This problem spans both DirecTV stream and DirecTV satellite. It's my suspicion that they use the same software to back end both these services. It's been a problem on DirecTV satellite for years.

It would be interesting to find out if using the Gemini Air or Gemini box to schedule the recordings makes any difference at all but probably not since it sounds like this is a problem with DirecTV's software on the back end.

If it was the meta data sent by the networks that causes this, it would be hard to believe that both The Tennis Channel and ESPN makes the same mistake. I really hope DirecTV can get this fixed by the time the French Open/Wimbledon rolls around.

Has this issue with DirecTV Stream not recording multiple and later Tennis Channel matches  on the same day (because the program title is exactly the same) been resolved??

Example from initial post:

March 6th thru 13th

2024 BNP Paribas open tennis at 11am (8hrs) live

2024 BNP Paribas open tennis at 7pm (3hrs) live

French Open is coming up next month and this has been a recurring problem with DirecTV Stream.

I thyink it's going to continue to happen so long as the program provider keeps identifying both broadcasts as being the same program, and they happen also to be on the same day in US time (different days in european local time). Don't know how directv can fix this.

Sure, DTV can fix this.

These programs are marked as LIVE broadcast. All live broadcasts should not be going through the algorithm that forces half the programs not to be recorded. DTV should record all live programs regardless of program description, time of day, Network etc.. If it is a live broadcast how does DTV know that it's a duplicate?

From my point of view recording more programs is better than not recording enough. The user has the ability to delete excess recordings but can't record something that has already been broadcast.

As I have said before when I switch to streaming, it will not be DTV stream as long as this problem exists.

That's funny, that's what this thread is all about maybe you should read the whole thing

chandria - you clearly did not read the post.

It's a lot more complex than you think. Several channels have a habit of repeating a program without changing the metadata. People complained loudly about getting a program recorded multiple times.

I can now answer my own question from my previous post above. When I posted before, I was on the trial of the no contract DirecTV Stream using just the DirecTV app on a Fire TV. I have now subscribed to DirecTV via Internet with a contract so I am now using a Gemini Air dongle. The same problem exists when scheduling recordings with the Gemini Air interface and guide as with the app before.

I still don't buy the meta data excuse. For example, "Bloomberg Wall Street Week" on the Bloomberg Television channel is shown like 8 separate times over every weekend from Friday to Sunday. It's the exact same episode just repeated multiple times over the weekend. When I schedule to series record only new episodes of this show, the DirecTV cloud DVR records EVERY single showing of this same episode even though only the first showing on Fridays is actually a new episode. DirecTV records every single showing even though each showing has the same title and is shown multiple times on the same day.

So I don't understand why DirecTV records every single showing of this show with the same exact title but for tennis and some other shows, it does not. I still haven't yet figured out a way to force it to record a show that has the same title as a previous showing with the same title. It thinks they are one and the same when in some cases they are not. It's too bad DirecTV doesn't allow scheduling recordings by starting time instead of only by title.
