Audio problems on AppleTV only...

I have two Samsung TVs with DirecTV Stream app and also two AppleTVs with DirecTV Stream app.

I am experiencing an issue with the Apple TV apps where the audio is not playing properly through multichannel audio (Best Output) through AppleTV.

If I force 2-channel only, I get all of the audio.  If I do multi-channel, I have no voices or main audio.  Only background.

If I switch to the Samsung TV app, I get all of the multichannel audio.  It is clear that this is AppleTV app only, and related to Atmos output (best available output).  Please assist.

Additionally, all other apps (ESPN, Motortrend, CBS, Disney, etc.) have no audio issues.

I have a similar problem with AppleTV and NetFlix, and with AppleTV and HBO.  Doesn't happen all the time, but does about 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 shows.  Seems to happen the most when the show changes from the 'in last weeks episode' or the intro song to the main show.  I'm guessing it is switching audio formats when that happens.

Interesting.  I haven't noticed the issue with any other app except DirecTV Stream.

@DIRECTVhelp

I am an Apple Certified Technical Coordinator

1. Hardware: Apple TV 4K (2022)

2. Hardware: Samsung 85” Class QN90B Samsung Neo QLED 4K Smart TV (2022)

3. The Directv App is at the latest update

4. The Apple TV is at the latest update

5. The Samsung TV is at the latest update

6. The audio worked for a week then stopped

7. All apps including HBO MAX, HULU, NETFLIX, CNN, etc have working audio

8. If the Directv Stream app channel offers it, I can change "Audio Track" to "Alternate" and I get sound, but no sound exists on "Default"

9. I have unplugged the Apple TV for 30 min

10. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Directv Stream app

11. I have swapped a different and new Belkin 4K Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 Cable

12. I have no sound

Please advise.

@DIRECTVhelp

I was able to get the sound back:
1. Settings> Video and Audio > Audio Output > Temporary Audio Output > Select > any AirPlay source, in my case I chose MacBook Pro.
2. When I disconnected the Apple TV from the Macbook Pro via AirPlay the audio was gone again in the Directv Stream app.
3. I reconnected to my Macbook Pro via AirPlay then shut down the Macbook Pro.
4. The Apple TV then lost the connection to the Macbook Pro and the Directv Stream app began working again. the issue seems resolved.
5. Again, there is/was no audio issue with HBO Max. Netflix, Hulu, etc.
6. This IS a Directv Stream app issue not handshaking properly with the Apple TV.

To fix this issue set the audio on your Samsung to Digital Output Audio Format PCM

Settings - Sounds - Expert Setting - Digital Output Audio Format - change from AUTO to PCM

The original post is from a year ago. Thank you DirectTV for being no help. Took me less than 5 minutes to figure it out. All upper management for support should be fired.

thank you to the user above as the same thing fixed this with my LG tv and LG Atmos soundbar. What is odd is all the other apps on the AppleTv seemed to work fine.

on the LG tv I changed the HDMI audio input format to PCM, versus bitstream which seems to be default.  I also changed the output to PCM on the LG Digital Sound Out.  I am not sure if just changing one setting would have fixed it or if it was other.

So more in our.  I changed the LG Tv hdmi input to PCM but had to do the sound output to pass through in order for the Apple TV so see that it is dealing with a Receiver Speaker.  If setting the LG Tv output to PCM the Apple TV thinks it is internal speakers. Not sure that matters but it was annoying that the Apple TV was not getting any input back from the Receiver LG Soundbar.

with the LG HDMi input set to PCM the Apple TV no longer shows Atmos as an option under the audio settings. It just says “auto”.  When set to bitstream (LG HdMI input  and HDMI out pass through the AppleTv knows it’s a receiver and that it has ATMOs capability).

it’s irritating that the DirectTv app is the only all that sound seems to drop down low on when not set to PCM.

Does your AppleTV get data back on your sound bar being ATMOS.
