Streaming from a foreign country

I will be staying in a foreign country for several months. I will keep my current account with DIRECTV stream active and my  router on. If I use a VPN network will I be able to connect to my current setup?

Maybe, but it is quite cumbersome. It is against the rules of DIRECTV STREAM (illegal) to do what you are stating as they are only authorized to serve people in the 48 contiguous states.
