No returns
We canceled Direct TV and was told that we do not return the equipment and we will be charged $110 for the cost of the equipment since we didn't keep the service for 2 years, yet everything we read says equipment must be returned. Quite confused by this.

Hello, we know any unexpected charge is not the ideal situation. We contacted you through PM to clarify your doubts about the charge you received after canceling the account. Laura, DIRECTV Community Specialist

The key thing is knowing which service you had. Did you have DirecTV or DIRECTV STREAM? (satellite or streaming-only)
If DirecTV, then boxes must be returned regardless of how long you've had them. Unless the boxes have become non-returnable models. You pay an Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) on your final bill which is $20 x remaining months of your 24 month service agreement.
If DIRECTV STREAM, were you paying for the DIRECTV STREAM box monthly? If so, then you pay the remainder of the installments on your final bill.

That compared to the $110 cost is why wasn't sure if you had DirecTV or DIRECTV STREAM. Thanks for clearing it up. I do wish they hadn't used similar naming. So it is up to the consumer to make sure which of the two services they are reading about.
The box is owned with the streaming service, you aren't renting/leasing it. So the one-time charge should just be the total of whatever installments you had left.

If you try the DirecTV Stream service and cancel within 14 days, you can return the box (either shipping it by their preferred method - I'm not sure what that is right now - or returning it to an AT&T store) for a refund. However, they are very strict about the 14 days. Beyond that it's yours and you will need to pay for it, Details on the cancellation policy are here.
