Does DirecTV Stream require a 24-month contract?
I see a 24-month commitment period and steep early termination fee in the fine print, but then on the ordering page it clearly says month-to-month, cancel anytime. Which is correct?

Two different streaming services. DirecTV via Internet has a 24 month agreement but DIRECTV STREAM does not.
DirecTV (satellite): 24 month service agreement, TV fees, RSN fee (when applicable).
DirecTV via Internet: Billing model essentially equivalent to DirecTV (satellite), requires use of their proprietary streaming box.
DIRECTV STREAM: No service agreement, no TV fees, no RSN fee. Is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model (Roku, Firestick, etc.). You can purchase DirecTV's streaming box from authorized retailers if you want a more traditional TV remote experience with channel numbers.

DirecTV via Satellite and DirecTV via Internet does require a 2-year commitment and also fees. DirecTV Stream (the streaming version) BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) does not require a contract and has no fees. Check out the streaming version located here
The main drawback with DirecTV Stream service is the proprietary streaming box is not available. You can buy the box from 3rd party retailers like eBay or Amazon if you want the device.

Direct tv stream is JUNK , my friend ordered it and was never given the option or told he had the option to get his own streaming box to avoid the 24 month contract, so he’s had it less then month she just cancelled it cause didn’t know it didn’t have FOX channel and now there taking $480 due do to this 24 option that was NEVER TOLD that was optional if he was to get his own box. It’s ridiculous they bait you and don’t discuss all the facts when you first sign up.. gonna tell everyone not to get directTV PERIOD….

thats the service my friend ordered the DirectTV stream and the sales person had set him up with directv via internet without knowing till it had been signed up for and when he found out FOX channel wasnt available he went to cancel it, BUT they had signed him up to the wrong (Edited per community guidelines) service and now he's screwed outta paying for $480 due to cancelling it thinking he had the streaming service but didnt, sales person obviously didnt go over things with him at all ... wont recommend them to anyone, this is ridiculous .

That is why it is important to read paperwork in full no matter what a sales agent says. Protects against wrong information (whether it was on purpose or honest mistake).
Not recommending them means nothing. You will find no company that is immune to a bad agent. No excuse for that individual seller, but consumers must take responsibility as well to be vigilant and check/read all info.

Looks like I had the same complaint as everyone else on here. I was told I had to get their streaming device to sign up for service. I told their operator that I use Apple TV and didn’t need their device. He told me it was at no cost and I could just store it somewhere and don’t have to use it. I didn’t see that they were just wanting to give me equipment to justify putting me under a 2 year contract. Once I found out they added a termination fee of $420 once I accepted their equipment, I paid them the termination fee to not be a customer of theirs. I will never go to them again for service and will tell others about their evil practices. There are so many choices. Go elsewhere.

That was a bad agent then. I take it you left your feedback about the wrong info (or lack of info) when you canceled service. If not, there is also the option of a BBB complaint.
Yes there are many choices. For some DirecTV, or one of the streaming options DirecTV via Internet or DIRECTV STREAM, are the individual's right option. What happened with you is not what happens with everybody. No matter where you go the consumer should research and review information before making a decision as this could happen with any company.

@frazz Both services DirecTV Stream and DirecTV Via Internet share the same app. The 2 services are not the same. Your subscription determines what content you receive. If you have a contract, then you subscribed to DirecTV Via Internet and not DirecTV Stream. DirecTV Stream has no contract.

right i understand that but as far as my settings, acct info stuff etc i cant really do anything with it. there should be a better way to view our acct and make changes besides the minimal stuff on that app. when we had it before we were able to actually go into our acct and make changes. whrn on the acct part of the app theres only a few things you can do.

If you are going to the website on an actual computer than it shouldn't be able to take you to the app. The app is for mobile devices.
